Observation Narrative
This wetland vegetation is very thick. Prescribed burning would no doubt be beneficial to rare species. About one half of the Chamaecyparis thyoides trees are dead; the cause is unknown. Low (< 1 m) herb layer is virtually nonexistent - merely a few Acer rubrum seedlings and Chamaecyparis seedlings on fallen logs. Additional species likely occurred in the plot, but the thick vegetation prevented a careful search. An excellent description of the vegetation may be found in U89FRO01. To the west the wetland edge id influenced by groundwater seepage; plants such as Woodwardia areolata abound there.
Plot located ca. 120 m from western edge of wetland.
